The Newmarket Town Plate

The Newmarket Town Plate is a historic race which has been run here at the Home of Horseracing since 1666. The only remaining race run on part of the original Round Course (which starts on the National Stud grounds), the Town Plate was instigated by King Charles II, who also won the first running and became the first and only reigning monarch to win a race! The King stated that the race should be run 'forever’, and we remain committed to honouring his wishes.

The race is run over a stamina-sapping three-and-three-quarter miles and is certainly not for the faint hearted! It is a true test of fitness and determination for both equine and human participants, which finishes as you cross the line on the beautiful July Course. A privilege normally reserved only for the professionals.

Once one of the most prestigious races in the land, the Town Plate is now a pinnacle of glorious historical eccentricity, competed for by true amateurs, and brings down the curtains on the summer racing season at Newmarket.

The Articles of the Newmarket Town Plate Instituted by King Charles II in 1665

Articles ordered by his Majestic to be observed by all persons that put in horses to run for the Plate, the new Round-heate at Newmarkett, set out the 16th day of October, in the 17th yeare of our Soveraign Lord King Charles II. Which Plate is to be rid for yearly, the seconde Thursday in October, for ever:

Imprim's—That every horse, mare, or gelding that rideth for this prize shalbe led out between eleven and twelve of the clock in the forenoon, and shalbe ready to start by one of the same day.

Item—Evry horse that rideth shalbe bridled, saddled, and shod, and his rider shall weigh twelve stone, fourteen pounds to the stone; and evry rider that wanteth above one pound and a halfe after he hath rid the heat, shall win no plate or prize.

Item - Evry horse that rides the new Round Course three times over (set out the 16th day of October, in the 17th year of King Charles II.)  on the outside of the Ditch from Newmarket, shall leave all the posts and flags the first and last heats on the right hand, and the second on the left hand, starting and ending at the weighing post, by Cambridge Gap, called Thomond's Post.

Item—Whatsoever horse rideth willingly, or for advantage, within any of the said flags, shall win no plate or prize, but lose his stakes, and ride no more ; but if he be thrust by any horse against his will, then he shall lose only the heate ; provided he keeps all the rest of the flags, and come within distance.

Item —It is allowed for any horse to be relieved at the discrec'on of the owner at the end of each heat, and evry horse shall have half an hour's time to rub between each heat.

Item —Whosoever doth stop or stay any of the horses that rideth for this plate or prize, if he be either owner, servant, party, or bettor, and it appears to be willingly done, he shall win no plate, prize, or bets.

Item —Every rider that layeth hold on, or striketh any of the riders, shall win no plate or prize.

Item —If any horse, mare, or gelding, shall fall by any mischance, so that the rider be dismounted, and if does his best afterwards to get within  distance, and ride fair (which shall be determined by the Judges of the Field) he shall only lose the heat.

Item —Any of the Judges may weigh any of the riders at the end of any of the heats ; and if he be found to have fraudulently cast away any of his weight, and want any more than his pound and a halfc, he shall lose the plate, prize, and stakes.

Item —If any difference shalbe about riding for this plate, which is not expressed in these articles, it shalbe referred to the noblemen and gentlemen which are then present, and being contributors to the said plate; but more especially the Judges, the Judge being to be chosen every time the plate or prize is run for, by the major part of the contributors that are there present.

Item —Evry horse that winneth three heats shall win the plate or prize, without running the course.

Item —Evry horse that runneth for the plate or prize shall put in three pounds, except it be a contributor's horse, and then he shall put in forty shillings.

Item —Whosoever winneth the plate or prize shall give to the Clerk of the Course twenty shillings, to be distributed to the poor on both sides of Newmarket, and twenty shillings to the Clerk of the Race; for which he is to keep the course plain and free from cart roots.

Item —The Clerk of the Race is to receive the stakes before ny horse starts, and is to deliver it to the tenant for the time being, who is to give sufficient security, not only for his rent, but likewise to add such stakes to the ensuing plate or prize the next year.

Item —Evry Horse, Mare, or Gelding, that rideth for this plate or prize, shall likewise deposit twenty shillings for every heat, which the winning horse shall have ; and the last horse of every heat shall pay the second horse's stakes and his own, which stakes are likewise to be deposited into the Clerk of the Race's hands before the horses start, to pay the winning horse his stakes every heat, and likewise twenty shillings to the second horse, to save his stakes ; but if there runneth but two horses, then no stakes to be run for but what is to add to the next year's plate.

Item —No horse that winneth not one of the three Pleats shalbe permitted to come in and run the course.

Item —The plate or prize is to be run for tlie second Thursday in October, every rider carrying twelve stone weight, at fourteen pounds to the stone, besides bridle and saddle; and if any gentleman that rides shall carry weight in his saddle, he shall have liberty, provided he allows two pounds to the rest for the weight of their saddles.

Item —The Clerk of the Race is to summons the riders to start again at the end of half an hour by the signal of drum, trumpet, or any other way, setting up an hour glass for that purpose.

Item—No man is admitted to ride for this prize that is either a serving man or groom.

Item—Those horses that after the running of the three heats shall run the four mile course, shall lead away, and start within an hour and halfe, or else to win no plate or prize."

Meet Our Riders for 2024

My name is Deborah Walton and I am excited to be taking part in this years Newmarket Town Plate.

Last year I watched 81-year-old Colin Moore taking part in the race and he really inspired me. I decided I needed a challenge to push myself out of my comfort zone.

I have ridden all my life and ridden out for a few different trainers over the years interspersed with various secretarial roles and gaining a psychology degree as a mature student! I have always loved riding on the gallops but I have never actually ridden in a race!

I now have this amazing opportunity to ride in the race on my own horse Buzzard Trix (Barney) and it is an opportunity not to be missed! I have enjoyed the challenge of getting fit by going to the gym and getting out on my bike and riding Barney in his work.

Barney is trained by point to point trainer Heidi Brookshaw in Shropshire and comes off the back of winning the Lord Daresbury cup which is the feature race in the North West.

Hi everyone, im Claire Howie, im 37 years old and im from Stoke on Trent in Staffordshire . I Am a full time HGV Class1 lorry driver, where i spend most of my days in the countryside delivering feed to farmer's.

I also event my own horse Skeaping, and ex 2mile hurdler At BE90 with aspirations to go higher in due course. We are big ambassadors for RoR.

This will be my 1st ride in the Newmarket Town Plate, and feel extremely honoured to be given this opportunity to ride in this iconic race.

My ride is a previous winner of the Plate, back in 2021.

Friend's Dont Ask owned by Mr Bob Clarke and trained by Clare Ellam.

I have previously ridden in 2 Charity Races, 1, at Wetherby in 2021 Over 1m and The Air Ambulance Charity Race at Warwick 2022 over 1m 5f.

This will my biggest challenge yet, i love a good challenge, so thought hey why not go for it, and with my CatA license fast approaching i thought what a way to but all i know so far into action, in an actual race!

I currently ride out 3x a week along side my current job, riding both NH and Flat horse for Clare Ellam Dave Loughnane and John Stimpson.
Im so excited for race day as the actually my birthday weekend too, so how exciting would it be to get a winner too!

Interesting fact about me

I served in the British Army !

See u all on the 24th!!

65year old school site manager who has worked in the racing industry for most of his life, riding out since he was 13!

Currently riding out at Harriet Dickin racing.

Bob will be raising funds for Macmillan.

I’m a 2nd year veterinary student studying at Bristol university. I ride out for Michael Chapman alongside working at Home Farm Dairy.

It’s my first time taking part in the race. Fast Deal was the first horse I lead up, so will always be special to me for introducing me into the world of racing and now even more so.

image1xtp.png

A full-time veterinary surgeon but working for myself allows me to fit in riding out a few lots every day at Sarah Humphrey's as well point to pointing during the season.  After winning last year Dancing Shadow had a long relaxing holiday but despite his age still acts like a four-year-old and loves his work so is coming back to aim to win for a second year in a row.

  • Previous experience of the race

This is my first-time taking part in the Town Plate, having seen the race advertised over the last few years I always thought id like to ride in it but always struggled to find a suitable horse so this year i jumped at the chance.

  • Riding/Racing experience

I have ridden since I was around 8 years old, my family aren't horsey but it didnt stop me, borrowing ponies to take part in Pony Club, from here I started hunting and never looked back A couple of years ago I started riding out for Fran and Charlie Poste before then moving to Alex Hales. I work full time and ride out once or twice a week. In June of this year I had the priviledge or riding in the Ride for their Lives charity race at York racecourse for Macmillan raising over £20,000 for the charity. Although my ride for this race was somewhat of an outsider being a jumps horse in a 1 mile flat race I couldn’t have asked for a better first race experience. Having invested so much in getting fit for York I wasn't going to let that fitness go to waste so i entered the Town Plate.

  • An interesting fact about you.

When not working or riding out I play hockey for Banbury hockey club

  • Your training regime

I have a good team around me ex jockey Conor Shoemark is my personal trainer and I try to train with him twice a week in the gym, take part in hyrox based circuit training once a week, train with jockey coach Charlie Poste when I can. I am lucky enough to have a bit of a gym set up in my little box room at home which i use most days and 'Cedric' the equicizer is based in my sitting room!!
I am training the horse myself with the help of Alex Hales. I was offered Fagan last February following his retirement. I only ever rode him once in training, so it has been a bit of a learning curve with him. I have been joining in with the string at Alex' twice a week at his base on the Edgecote estate and am head up the road to use the gallops of Robert Waley-Cohen at Upton House. Fagan likes a bit of a variety with his work so we try and keep him a bit sweet with hacking around the farm and a bit of Cross country schooling. After the Town Plate Fagan will be going Team chasing so trying to juggle getting him fit for a flat race whilst also keeping his eye in has been a balance.

  • Any charity you may be raising funds for?

Having raised over £20,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support this year I have decided that I have probably reached my quota for bleeding friends and family dry so this race is for my own goals but my Just Giving page is open for anyone who may have missed out in June!!

  • Something interesting about your horse

Fagan has a warped sense of humor, he can be very sharp and likes to test any jockeys seat.

I'm the Social Media Manager at The Jockey Club and Rodney, as he's affectionately known, and I came fourth in the Town Plate last year. I celebrated as if I'd won because I was looking forward to the sausages! 12 months on and I definitely need a top up, so fingers crossed we can place again.
